Vancouver's five best holiday traditions

Vancouver may be better known for its spectacular natural scenery and world-class culinary options, but the city is also very faithful to celebrating the holiday season with markets, lights, and seasonal events to spark the festive spirit.

We’ve collected five of the best Vancouver holiday celebrations and one brand new event that we’re excited about this year!

  • Vancouver Christmas Market is the city’s longest-running holiday tradition. It brings a traditional German market with artisan vendors, food, and a spectacular Christmas pyramid to Jack Poole Plaza. Warm up with Glühwein while you shop and feel the festive spirit.

  • With free entry and over 75 food and shopping stalls, and ice skating, the Shipyards Christmas Market is a just a short SeaBus ride away in North Vancouver. It’s a perfect place to take the family, or to escape for a festive date with mulled wine and live holiday music.

  • VanDusen Festival of Lights is a holiday light show with over a million lights and decorations at the famed VanDusen Botanical Garden. Explore 15 acres decorated with over 1 million holiday lights, including a number of exciting theme displays to enchant and delight.

  • Nothing says “winter in Canada” like lacing up the skates for a spin around the ice. The Robson Square Ice Rink is a very popular spot to enjoy some public ice skating in a twinkling downtown setting. It a perfect way to work up a thirst and appetite before enjoying some festive eats and drinks.

  • The Canyon Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge combine two of the city’s favourite things: holiday lights and the beauty of the North Shore mountains. Featuring a dazzling display of lights on the suspension bridge and surrounding park and a new 3D Wildlight projection show, it’s an experience which could only I happen in Vancouver.

  • Newly opened this year, Britannia Village on Highway 99 is transforming into a holiday wonderland with a 24’ illuminated tree, selfie spots, and festive décor wrapping the historic mining town buildings, some over a century old. If you’re travelling to Whistler, or looking for a mountain getaway close to the city it’s a must visit!
